Waves
I. disturbances
Longitudinal waves vibrate parallel to the direction of propagation. Transverse waves vibrate at right angles to the direction of propagation.
A. medium
1. tsunamis in water (video symbol)
2. earthquake waves in rock
3. sound waves in air
B. vacuum
1. such as radio, light and microwaves
C. energy transport
Particles in a medium are temporarily displaced by a wave but return to their original position after the wave passes.
D. wavelength
1. frequency
Frequency is measured in vibrations per second. One vibration per second is called a hertz.
a. pitch of sound waves
High pitched sounds have a higher frequency than low pitched sounds.
(1) low
(2) high
E. amplitude
Amplitude is the maximum positive displacement of the wave form.
1. intensity
a. high
b. low
