VIII. Troubleshooting[W17]

[W1]A project is an operation that produces an output in a set timeframe. For example, the creation of a new product or process.

Provide a definition of this project. What are its outputs (deliverables)? What items are included? What are excluded?
[W2]It's a good idea to state explicitly what is excluded from the scope of the project.

What features might people think are included but actually are not?
[W3]Add details of budget, deadlines and work to be done. These are interlinked.

For example, if the work increases deadlines will have to move out or the budget will have to increase.

[W4]What is the cost of the project?

Include the cost of people, materials, services and equipment.
[W5]What are the deadlines?

[W6]How much work is required (person hours, days or weeks)?

[W7]It's often useful to divide a project into phases, for example a specification phase, an engineering phase, and a testing phase.

These may or may not overlap.

[W8]Create a schedule. You can add the key data here and then display the branch as a timeline.

Project management software will make this task easier.
[W9]Build in some contingency for unforeseen requirements.

For example, testing may reveal the need for more engineering work than originally planned.
[W10]Who will be responsible for ensuring the project remains on track? Regular meetings will usually be required. Who will attend?

When will the meetings be held?
[W11]Will personnel need training?
[W12]What tasks will be carried out in Phase 1 of your project? The sub-branches shown here are examples only.

If your project is not split into phases you could rename this branch "Tasks".
[W13]What tasks will be carried out in Phase 2 of the project? Delete this branch if you don't need it.
[W14]What tasks will be carried out in Phase 3 of the project? Delete this branch if you don't need it. Add more branches if you have more that three phases.
[W15]Add the latest details of the project's progress.
[W16]Watch out for unplanned features being introduced without proper consultation. Add details here.

These can adversely affect budget and/or deadline.
[W17]Deadlines may be brought in, budgets reduced, work added: all projects have problems.

Create procedures to handle unusual difficulties than cannot be covered by built-in contingency.
